| Texas Rangers youngsters need to show gradual improvement
SURPRISE, Ariz. – In 1983, the Briarcliff Barons (my alma mater) played for the Georgia High School state championship in baseball. My buddies and I hung out at Cosmos video arcade, played Galaga and USA vs. USSR bubble hockey. A much thinner and well-coiffed future sportswriter took the lovely Adele Medina to prom where we danced the night away to Steve Perry and Journey. You haven't really lived until you've slow danced to "Lights." And 14 players currently in the Rangers' spring training camp, were not even born yet. This means two things: 1. I'm getting older and paunchier. 2. The Rangers are getting younger. If there is a focus at spring training this year, it should be on that group of 14 (for the record, it's Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Brandon McCarthy, Luis Mendoza, Chris Davis, Taylor Teagarden, John Mayberry Jr., German Duran, Eric Hurley, Julio Borbon, Brandon Boggs, Joaquin Arias, Max Ramirez, Matt Harrison and Elvis Andrus) and what they show management over the next six weeks.
2 law leaders out over handling of slur
Two of South Carolina's top-ranking law-enforcement officials are out of jobs because the governor says they were too lenient on a state trooper captured on video using a racial slur as he threatened to kill a suspect. Gov. Mark Sanford announced Friday that Department of Public Safety director Jim Schweitzer, whom Sanford appointed in 2004, and Col. Russell Roark, who heads the Highway Patrol, had offered their resignations Friday morning. A video from a 2004 traffic stop in Greenwood County shows a suspect fleeing. From off camera, the trooper yells, "You better run, n-----, because I'm fixin' to kill you." The governor said the trooper, who is still on patrol, should have been fired. Schweitzer and Roark say they stand by the punishment they handed out -- anger management and diversity training.
Budget fight looms for teachers
As this plays out, I would expect a real mobilization of the education community," said Bill Hedrick, president of the Rialto Education Association. Schwarzenegger faced off against teachers - and lost - in the 2005 special election when the governor backed a package of ballot measures intended to increase his ability to cut spending, reduce the power of public employee unions and require teachers to work more years before attaining tenure. In the weeks before the election, it was almost impossible to watch television in the Golden State without viewing teacher-backed ads against the ballot measures. Aaron McLear, a .
Apple Wants To Make DRM Extortion Explicit
So spare me the "Apple is the New Microsoft" tripe. If it wasn't for Jobs you'd be slaved to Sony and Microsoft and "consumer rights" and "fair use" would be punchlines to jokes told at corporate headquarters. But why should you get the HD-DVD for free just because you own the DVD? Going from DRM to non-DRM is not a technological advancement as is the benefits of going from DVD to HD-DVD/BluRay.
Giants, Jets prepare to scout combine
For general managers Jerry Reese and Mike Tannenbaum, though, the task marks the beginning of the Giants' attempt to keep the status quo and for the Jets to turn things around. It could prove a tougher road for Reese and his Super Bowl-winning staff. As they say, reaching the top is a lot easier than staying there. "It'll be a little different this year because everybody will be patting us on the back and saying, 'Good job,' '' Reese said. "But we'll try to stay focused and get us another strong draft class. "The bar's been set high. I have this great fear of winning the Super Bowl and not making the playoffs the next year. We don't want that. We don't want to disappear.'' Reese heads into Indianapolis with fond memories of his last combine his first as general manager which began the trail to an unquestionable home run of a 2007 draft.
STAR AND BUC WILD RETURN TO NY AIRWAVES!
Man, this radio game is something to see! Star and Buc Wild are slated to announce their return to New York City airwaves! There aren't too many places for them to go so I am going to assume that they are going to a station not called Hot 97. I would say Power 105, but I don't want to be wrong, so I will just say they are coming back and prepare for fireworks! NAS GETS HIS WIG ADJUSTED If you thought you were going to get Nas in December, you must know that is not going to happen. Nas got his wig pushed back like many before him and N****r will now drop in February. Now, how ironic is that – during Black History Month. Nevertheless, according to a recent mtv report, DJ Toomp (my favorite producer of the moment), Salaam Remi, Diddy and others are on board.
